Chipotle Stops Serving Pork After Animal Treatment Issues With Supplier
Chipotle announced that it was pulling carnitas from hundreds of its restaurants after a routine audit of one of its suppliers revealed animal treatment issues. The supplier, which Chipotle has not named, was raising pigs without access to the outdoors or deeply bedded pens.
While Chipotle should be applauded for this move, it left much unsaid. For example, how long had it been purchasing pork from this unnamed supplier, and how often was it conducting animal welfare audits? Was this a reversion to poor treatment on the past of the supplier, or what it something that Chipotle had missed – and if the latter, or how long? Consumers ostensibly choose Chipotle for its claimed commitment to animal welfare (although consumers should read the fine print on these points in all Chipotle restaurants), and rely on the chain to provide the product it advertises. Chipotle’s customers deserve to know how long they have been consuming pork that did not meet Chipotle’s animal welfare standards, and reassurance that Chipotle has the policies in place to nips its suppliers’ inhumane animal treatment in the bud.
